Veneta is a city in Oregon's Lane County. Situated almost 12 miles west of Eugene, this small city is close to the Fern Ridge Reservoir, plays home to an abundance of picturesque natural areas and wildlife, and has wineries and farms nearby, all of which make the city an attractive place to visit and live. Veneta's history dates back to 1912 when a town was platted by Edmund Hunter. Some sources say the town was situated on forest land while others called it a goat farm covered with scrub vegetation in the Central Road area. Later, Hunter traded his farm for almost 1100 acres, whose owner was John McCutcheon, because he favored real estate over farming. Hunter sold 50% of his real estate undertaking to Charles Dunham. It was Dunham who gave the town its name - “Veneta,” after the youngest daughter of Hunter. In 1962, what was earlier a town became the 10th incorporated city in Lane County.
Veneta is famous for playing host to Fern Ridge Lake, which is the Willamette Valley’s largest reservoir with 9,000 acres. It's a popular destination for various water sports such as swimming, water skiing, standup paddling, sailing, fishing, flatwater kayaking, and windsurfing. You could even go bird watching when visiting the area. Coyote Creek is another popular destination for birding and wildlife watching, in addition to offering its excellent foot trail and canoe trail for the visitors and city's residents alike. The 58-acre Zumwalt Park on Fern Ridge Reservoir’s west is another spot worth visiting where you can go picnicking, walking, birding, and disc golfing on the 18-hole course of “The Fort” that loops through the park.
